We’ve got the lowdown on what we think are the best beaches to visit in and around Bournemouth 🙂 With seven glorious miles of Blue flag laden coastline there’s something to suit everyone.

Best Family Friendly Beach – Bournemouth Beach:

Voted the UK’s favourite beach and named the fifth best-rated beach in Europe and 20 in the world by Trip Advisor this year Bournemouth beach is perfect for families, groups, singles and couples. Walk down to the beach through the stunning Grade II, picture perfect Victorian gardens or maybe stop for a picnic in the gardens on the way. There’s plenty to do around the area too, with the Bournemouth Rock Reef Activity Centre re-opening on Saturday 29th May and the Pierzip re-opening on Saturday the 15th May 2021.

The Rock Reef Activity Centre located at the end of Bournemouth Pier and is an all weather indoor attraction based on adventure sports. It includes climbing walls, a vertical slide drop, a jumping challenge, high ropes, and more and is suitable for all ages and all abilities. Outside, the pierzip is the worlds first pier to shore 250m dual zipline and provides an unforgettable experience zooming to the beach over the waves. Advance booking is recommended for both of these attractions.

Best Family Friendly Beach - Bournemouth Beach

Best Pet Friendly Beach – Hengistbury Head Beach:

Hengistbury Head is approx 5.5 miles from our self-catering accommodation in Bournemouth and takes around 12 mins in a car. Alternatively, the number ‘33’ yellow bus can take you almost there, from the main bus station, which is also a 10 min walk from our self-catering homes. If you disembark at The Broadway Shops, Hengistbury Head is just a short 5 min walk from here. Alternatively, you may wish to take the Vintage Ferry Service from Tuckton Tea Gardens in Tuckton which takes you to Mudeford Spit. This is a thoroughly enjoyable journey on a nice day and a wonderful way to travel to The Spit.

Hengistbury Head is an outstanding area of dramatic headland and an incredible location for wildlife, beautiful beaches and wonderful views across The Isle of Wight, The New Forest and The Purbecks. It is a great place for a day out and is suitable for all ages and abilities. There is paid parking available on-site as well as a cafe and other eateries further round to Mudeford Spit, which can be reached via land train, walking, or cycling. Why not take a picnic? Please note that BBQ’s are not permitted anywhere on Hengistbury Head, including its beaches.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Hengistbury Head and this includes the beaches too which is great for our four legged pals that love a swim 🙂 Visitors are reminded while walking around the area with their dogs that this is a nature reserve with rare and easily frightened birds and wildlife and dogs should be kept under good control and close by at all times (preferably on a lead).

Best Family Friendly Beach - Bournemouth Beach

Best ‘Away from the Crowds’ Beach – Mudeford Spit:

If you want to escape the crowds of the Bournemouth beaches this summer then you will want to take a trip to Mudeford Spit Beach located on Hengistbury Head. This beach is one of the most picturesque places you will ever visit and the water is just perfect for watersports and swimming.

Please note there is no lifeguard service at this beach. Mudeford Spit can be accessed by foot, bike or land train from Hengistbury Head car park.

Alternatively, you may wish to take the ferry from Mudeford Quay or Christchurch Quay. Please note that the ferry is only able to take wheel chair users that are able to embark and disembark from their wheelchair due to the Sandy nature of the site. There are 5 public toilet blocks here, one with hot showers and outside cold showers are also provided. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round.
